The ex-chairman of the Biosafety Council at ABRII


     The ex-chairman of the Biosafety Council of Turkey and presently a board member of the Department of Microbiology of Ankara University, Hakan Yardimci, visited the Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran (ABRII), on July 15th, 2018.

     ABRII hosted Prof. Hakan Yardimci accompanied by Prof. Shahrbanoo Oryan, the Dean faculty of Biological Sciences of Kharazmi University and other delegations in order to find mutual cooperation opportunities between the two countries and to have a better awareness of ABRII’s premises, achievements, and ongoing research projects.

     The meeting was hosted by Prof. Behzad Ghareyazie, the Head of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biosafety of ABRII. As it was declared by Dr. Ghareyazie, the main focus of ABRII is food security and sustainable agriculture; accordingly, projects such as Iran’s insects resistant rice, transgenic cotton, glyphosate resistant rice, transgenic potato resistant to the potato tuber moth, bioengineering of rice root to cope with the serious water crisis, metabolic engineering of ornamental plants, identification and introduction of Salicornia as a halophyte and preparation of its mass propagation protocol, etc were presented.

     This visit was followed by a tour of the laboratories and to the first Iran greenhouse dedicated to the research on GM plants provided by the international office of ABRII. The delegations showed their determination for future collaboration.
